DATE: Saturday, August 14th 2010
PLACE: Bear Lake State Park, Garden City, UT (Rendezvous Beach)
START TIME: Sprint Course Waves Begin at 9:00AM
Sprint Distance: 0.75k swim/ 20k bike/ 5k run
PLEASE ARRIVE BEFORE 7:00AM. Athletes completing the HALF will be on the course by 7:00AM.
Please review Course Map in detail! Know your course. We have nine races in one event and one course doesn't share the bike OR run course of the other two.
Bear Lake is only a few feet low, however it is a relatively shallow lake for a couple hundred yards into the lake at the South end. From the beach the water may be over 100 yards away from the parking lot (and true sand beach) and the water may continue to be shallow for another 100-200 yards into the lake. Swimmers may stand up in the water to rest and will not be disqualified, BUT there may be hazards on the bottom of the lake. The swim will start on the shore and be a running start into the water. The swim will be in a counter clockwise direction. All buoys will be on the left shoulder. All Swimmers will do one lap. Sprint athletes will swim to the closest buoys turning to the left with the buoys on their left and head back to the beach.
If you need a rest, while in the water, waive your arms or simply swim to the nearest kayak. You can hold on to this without penalty.
If you need to cut your swim short for any reason, let the kayaker know this and they will bring you in to shore. Please turn in your timing chip to race staff at that point. Again, if you are struggling or need to rest, you may actually be able to stand up during many sections of the swim.
Follow the marked path to transition! There are hazards on the beach like small stumps if you decide to run off of the marked course. We DO NOT want you to suffer injury, and you will also be disqualified if you run off through any unmarked beach section.
Exit at the West end of transition. Ride out of the State Park staying to the right on all paved paths. Exit onto the main road, highway 30, making a LEFT hand turn. ALWAYS BIKE WITH TRAFFIC to the right of traffic. (You will have accelerated quite a bit at this point, so please be safe making this tight turn.) About 2 Miles into the ride, you will make a LEFT turn onto Main St in Laketown, UT. This is a sharp turn, so stay alert! You will travel almost directly north for about one mile at which time the road will make a sharp RIGHT turn and the road will change to N Cisco Rd. This will gradually wind around the south and East side of the lake with gradual rolling hills.
At about 6.21 miles into the ride, you will have your own turn around chute in the middle of the road to keep you separated from the long course cyclists. (You cannot miss it). You will then return using the same roads. When you arrive at the State Park entrance, stay to the right, just left of the runners marked path. Enter the transition slowly on the West side and get ready for your run!
NOTE: You cannot ride your bike through the transition area. Bike course is NOT closed to traffic except at turnaround points and at the LEFT turn onto Main St in Laketown.
Please obey the Course officials at intersections and turnarounds.
There will be No water Aid for the Sprint bike course. The water Aid is for the HALF course athletes on the 56 mile Bike Course. Bring your water bottles filled.
Cyclists are personally responsible for the proper working condition of their bike. Bike helmets ARE required! No helmet, No racing. No exceptions! USAT officials will be present at this race, DO NOT ride 2-3 people deep on this course! Future races depend on your cooperation. Thank you for respecting it. It is the athletes' responsibility to know and follow USA Triathlon rules. For complete rules visit usatriathlon.org. Absolutely no drafting another bike or any other vehicle is allowed. This is an individual endurance event. A space of at least 2-bike lengths must be left between competitors.
There is some trail running on this course! Over 1/3 of the course is not paved; it is hard packed dirt.
The run begins at the East side of transition (opposite from the large parking lot). You will run through a small paved turn around. On opposite site of the paved area, you will run on a small section of trail crossing a patch of grass separating the transition area from the RV camping area of the Park. When you reach the RV camping, pavement, turn RIGHT and follow the road to the right toward the Park Entrance to the RIGHT. Please stay to left on all roads unless cones designate otherwise. When you get to the road leading out of the Park, turn LEFT and stay to the FAR LEFT-bikes will be passing you on the right.
You will exit the Park turning LEFT onto highway 30. Please run on the shoulder or as close to it as you can run safely; this is not a closed course and vehicles will be passing you on the right. When you reach approximately Mile 1 on the map, you will make a soft LEFT turn onto 800 North. This is a dirt road. There will be an Aid Station wait at this turn. This road is not gavel; it is hard packed dirt and is slightly uneven in areas. Please be alert. At just over 1.5 Miles into the run, you will take a sharp LEFT onto another dirt road (350 West). This turn is slightly down hill; again be alert. This road is relatively narrow and windy. This is the most uneven section of road on the course. About 100 yard past Mile 2 on the map you will turn LEFT into an open fenced area. This is an equipment storage area for the Park and you will likely notice several parked tractors, trucks, etc. Run though this area. There will be an Aid Station just past this storage area. When you reenter the Park on the pavement, stay to the left, taking all left turns. This will take you back to where you started.
Sprint Athletes will now turn right on the road leading to transition in the RV camping area (the same way you ran out of transition). When you reach transition, run to the right on transition and come out at the main, large parking lot. Sprint to the FINISH!
Aid Stations and Restrooms: There will be water, HEED replenishment drink, and HAMMER Gel at Aid Stations approximately every mile. The restrooms for the Sprint are the State Park restrooms located immediately outside of the Transition Area. Please view course maps for details.
Please be sure to let the timing officials remove your timing chip at the finish of your race.
